Over time the meaning has changed, for genius loci refers to the cultural significance and then the emotional,
which is attributed to a site, for an area or city, usually refers to a location's distinctive atmosphere, or a "spirit of place", rather than necessarily a guardian spirit.
It is therefore an expression of "character" of a place, its characteristics interwoven with the habits and customs of the people who live there.
In this case assumes the role of genius loci which takes time to establish contact with our ancestors.
