Hendrich was primarily inspired by Richard Wagner's operas and Germanic mythology.From both, he drew diverse motifs for a vast body of work. In 1926, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Walpurgis Hall, Hermann Hendrich was made an honorary citizen of the town of Thale.By this time, he was already living a very secluded life in the artists' colony of Schreiberhau in the Giant Mountains, in close proximity to the poets Carl and Gerhard Hauptmann.Despite his popularity, Hendrich was soon forgotten after his death.The isolation of Schreiberhau may have contributed to this.During the war, two of his halls—the Hendrich Hall in Kiel at the Kehdenhaus and the German Legends Ring Hall in Burg—were completely destroyed.The Hall of Legends in the Giant Mountains (Schreiberhau) likely fell into disrepair during the post-war years.Countless paintings have been lost since then.
