With their new album Freiheit, TENSION CONTROL opens another chapter in the history of electronic body music. Between fat synth sequences and raw vocals, a work unfolds that looks far back into the past, into the events of a state that no longer exists. Inspired by their own experiences of childhood and youth in the former GDR, as well as the memories and fractures of an entire generation of young people in the German Democratic Republic: gray streets, high walls, a planned economy, prohibitions and controls by an authoritarian state—but also purposeful optimism, the search for freedom, rebellion, and resistance on both a small and large scale.
But Freiheit doesn't just look back: between the lines, there is also criticism of the political and social conditions of the present. Sometimes subtle, sometimes forceful, the album shines a spotlight on the chronicle of life in contrasting systems. It is a work that finds expression in moments of anger and reflection and, through many small stories—some of which really happened, some of which could have happened—entertains and provides food for thought at the same time.
Musically, TENSION CONTROL bridges the gap between the raw roots of classic EBM and a contemporary modernization and evolution of the genre. Electronic Body Music is alive and kicking, and it's more than just nostalgia. Freedom breathes the raw energy of the old school and continuously develops the genre with modern synthesizers and sophisticated content. Old school meets new sound production, nostalgia meets innovation – a tribute to the origins, but also a determined look ahead.
EBM remains uncomfortable, allowing itself critical questions and assessments. An album for everyone who has sweat, attitude, and aggressive tones in their blood. Freedom is more than music: it is a statement, an echo of times past, a commentary on the present, and an impulse for the future of the scene.
